Beaumont ISD Week 12, step 9

1.       How did the plan meet the existing needs in technology, funding, and management issues?
My plan meets the needs of technology because it provides the opportunity for all existing technologies. In addition, the current plan allows for teachers to learn how to use programs that allow for data analysis.

Our district’s funding needs are met by its continued commitment to seeking Erate and other funding opportunities to pay for much needed technology and training within the district (Beaumont ISD, 2010). Our plan includes avenues to seek funding in the form of grants, private contributions or donations as well as district provided funds that are currently in place for technology purchases.

Management issues are met by the district providing necessary personnel to install and manage the technology (Beaumont ISD, 2010). Our plan has provisions for technology training for teachers and deciding on an Instructional Technology Specialist to assist classroom teachers to plan and implement technology into their lessons.

2. How did the goals provide the measurable outcomes for future improvement?

The goals are considered at a variety of periods to make sure the plan is workable and actually reachable throughout the existence of the plan. Any part of the plan that is not possible has the potential to be re-written.  The tools used to establish feasibility are surveys, student portfolios and formative evaluations.

3. How did the strategies defined to meet the proposed objectives?

The strategies meet the proposed objectives because they gave a step-by-step outline of the objectives to implement the goals. According to Dick and Carey, strategies can be used as a prescription to develop instructional materials, as a set of criteria to evaluate existing materials, and as a set of criteria and a prescription to revise existing materials.

  1. In looking at your statement about funding I think your district falls into the majority of educational entities that must look for additional funding to support technology in the educational process. “There has been a gap between the potential of technology and its measurable impact on learning. Buying a cart of laptops or wiring a school is no longer the end goal. New federal priorities tell us that the ultimate result must be an increase in student achievement, and if technology can support this result and prove its worth, then technology can be an integral component of a grant application.” (Love, 2011, p. 60) The key is to not just add technology to add technology. We must be able to integrate technology into the curriculum and see increased student achievement from these results.

  2. I agree with you about parts of the plan meeting the existing needs, but I really feel we still have a long way to go in BISD. I have had the opportunity to work on 4 different campuses in Beaumont and at each one the campus computer liaison has been extremely helpful. However, their main position is the maintenance of hardware, software and the network. On a large campus especially this limits their time to assist teachers with incorporating technology into their lessons. Our plan does mention the creation of the Instructional Technologists position on each campus to assist teachers. Do you think we will ever get there, Tanya? I wonder if our new superintendent has different priorities than our old one.

  3. I too saw that in the technology plan. We have only one person on our campus and she concentrates on maintenance of hardware, software and the network. I hope with the new leader we will see the necessary changes that are need to get us were we should be as for as technology integration.
